It’s Never too Late to Straighten Your Smile

Braces as an adult? No way. At least, that was what I thought when my dentist told me that I was going to have to see an orthodontist about my crooked teeth. But my teeth were so misaligned that they were causing me pain when I chewed, so I decided to at least look into it. Turns out braces today are nothing like the ones my friends had when I was a kid. Mine were practically invisible, and I didn't need to wear them that long. I started this blog to encourage other people like me who are nervous about the prospect of wearing braces as an adult. My straight smile is so worth the trips to the orthodontist, and wearing braces was nowhere near as bad as I thought. Read on to find out more about how you can straighten your smile.

4 FAQ About Dental Crowns

by Jacqueline Byrd

When you think of a crown, you think of something that goes on top of the head. That is kind of what a dental crown is like, as it goes on top of the tooth. There are various situations that may require a dentist to place a dental crown. A damaged tooth is the most common reason. Some people put a dental crown on a discolored tooth in order to improve its appearance.

If you want to know more, here are the answers to four frequently asked questions about dental crowns.

1. What Are Dental Crowns Made From?

A crown looks just like a tooth. It can be made from a variety of materials including:

  • Metal alloys
  • Ceramic
  • Porcelain
  • Zirconia

Another type is a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown. If you need to get a crown, your dentist will make sure the color matches your natural teeth.

2. How Much Do Dental Crowns Cost?

Dental crowns can be rather expensive. On average, a dental crown costs anywhere from $500 to $3,000 per tooth. The primary factor that affects the cost of the crown is what kind of material the crown is made from.

If you need a crown but don't have the money to pay for one, check with your dental insurance to see how much they cover. In most cases, they will pay up to 50% for restorative procedures. Medicare usually only covers emergency dental work. In some states, Medicaid covers restorative dental work for adults. There are also several dental discount plans available.

3. How Long Does it Take to Get a Dental Crown?

It usually takes two separate dental visits to get a crown. The dentist must first prepare the tooth that needs to be restored. After that, the dentist will need to make an impression. Sometimes, a temporary crown is necessary until the permanent one is ready to be placed. Then the new crown will need to be made before it can be placed at a later visit.

Some dentists offer one-visit crown services so that everything is done more quickly. Check with your dentist to see if they offer this convenient service.

4. How Long Does a Dental Crown Last?

Once a permanent crown is placed, it's important to take good care of it. The better you take care of the crown, the longer it will last. On average, dental crowns last anywhere from 5 to 15 years. To make it last closer to 15 years, don't eat hard foods, don't grind your teeth, and practice good oral hygiene.
