It’s Never too Late to Straighten Your Smile

Braces as an adult? No way. At least, that was what I thought when my dentist told me that I was going to have to see an orthodontist about my crooked teeth. But my teeth were so misaligned that they were causing me pain when I chewed, so I decided to at least look into it. Turns out braces today are nothing like the ones my friends had when I was a kid. Mine were practically invisible, and I didn't need to wear them that long. I started this blog to encourage other people like me who are nervous about the prospect of wearing braces as an adult. My straight smile is so worth the trips to the orthodontist, and wearing braces was nowhere near as bad as I thought. Read on to find out more about how you can straighten your smile.

Finding The Right Dentist To Handle Your Dental Implant Procedure

by Jacqueline Byrd

If you are considering dental implants, your family dentist is not the person you want to handle the procedure. A dental implant dentist specializes in implants and oral surgery, so they have the experience and training to put the implants in place correctly, ensuring your implants last for years without problems.

Understanding Implants

You should understand how dental implants work before you decide to have an implant dentist put them in for you. The dental implant starts with a stainless steel stud that goes into your jaw bone, replacing the roots of the tooth.

Once the stud is put in place, an enamel tooth is made that is shaped and sized to fit, and some color is applied to make the replacement match your natural teeth. The tooth is positioned on the stud and permanently affixed, so it remains solid and acts just like any other tooth in your mouth.

The implant dentist can put in one implant, or several at a time, depending on how many teeth you are missing. To better understand the procedure for your situation, meet with an implant dentist and have them go over the best options for your needs.

Alternatives To Dentures

Dental implants are fast becoming the best alternative to dentures for people missing many teeth. The implant dentist can place studs in your jaw and attach the teeth to the studs.

While they are essentially installing a permanent denture for the patient, the benefits are significant. Denture wearers often complain about their dentures moving around in their mouth when they are eating or talking, but the implants lock the teeth down tightly, so there is no movement.

The care of the implanted teeth involves brushing them as you would your natural teeth, so it eliminated denture cleaners, soaking trays, and special brushes to clean the dentures every day. Once the implant dentist finishes the procedure, the teeth never need removing unless there is damage to them that needs repairing.

Recovery Time

Dental implants are placed in the jaw bone, so there is some time required for healing. The time depends on the patient, but your implant dentist will help determine that for you. Often you will be restricted to a soft food diet while the bone heals and the sealing to your gums subsides, but if you follow the directions of the dentist, you will be eating normally in no time.

For patients getting full mouth implants, you may need to go back for a recheck after a few months, and the dentist may need to adjust the teeth some to ensure they fit perfectly in your mouth.
