It’s Never too Late to Straighten Your Smile

Braces as an adult? No way. At least, that was what I thought when my dentist told me that I was going to have to see an orthodontist about my crooked teeth. But my teeth were so misaligned that they were causing me pain when I chewed, so I decided to at least look into it. Turns out braces today are nothing like the ones my friends had when I was a kid. Mine were practically invisible, and I didn't need to wear them that long. I started this blog to encourage other people like me who are nervous about the prospect of wearing braces as an adult. My straight smile is so worth the trips to the orthodontist, and wearing braces was nowhere near as bad as I thought. Read on to find out more about how you can straighten your smile.

Why Dentists Often Recommend Dental Implants

by Jacqueline Byrd

When you and your dentist decide to have your teeth replaced with dental implants, a titanium rod will be inserted into your jaw in most cases. This is a procedure that is somewhat invasive, and you might wonder why your dentist might recommend this. A dental implant is one of the best ways to replace a missing tooth.

Dentures Vs. Dental Implants

With other methods of tooth replacement, such as dentures, the dentures do not always remain in place inside your mouth. You can use adhesives to hold the dentures in place, but they will sometimes move if the adhesive doesn't bond well enough. This can be inconvenient when talking or eating.

Reasons to Use Dental Implants

Dental implants are much more flexible and are able to replace a single tooth, which is impractical for dentures in many cases. The dental implant can also be used to replace multiple teeth at once by attaching several prosthetic teeth to your jaw using an implant.

How to Get Dental Implants

The titanium implant fuses with the jawbone through a process known as osseointegration. Your dentist will send you home and you will wait for the gun tissue to grow around the implant. This is a process that can take several months. Attached to the implant is an abutment that extends above the gumline. Then, the prosthetic tooth, such as a crown, is attached to the abutment.

Don't Let Your Jawbone Deteriorate

In addition to allowing you to attach a prosthetic tooth, you will also be able to prevent your jawbone from deteriorating. This is because jawbones tend to deteriorate when they are not stimulated by a tooth. The deterioration of your jawbone can lead to all sorts of other problems such as affecting the appearance of your face.

For example, the area around your jaw might start to sag. The less jaw you have before the surgery, the more difficult it might be. For example, you might need a bone graft before there will be enough bone matter to put the implant in place.

Follow the Instructions of Your Dentist

Your dental implant procedure will be the most successful if you follow the instructions of your dentist. For example, you will want to make sure that you avoid eating before the procedure and you will need to engage in excellent oral care after the procedure. Then, you will have more permanent teeth.
