It’s Never too Late to Straighten Your Smile

Braces as an adult? No way. At least, that was what I thought when my dentist told me that I was going to have to see an orthodontist about my crooked teeth. But my teeth were so misaligned that they were causing me pain when I chewed, so I decided to at least look into it. Turns out braces today are nothing like the ones my friends had when I was a kid. Mine were practically invisible, and I didn't need to wear them that long. I started this blog to encourage other people like me who are nervous about the prospect of wearing braces as an adult. My straight smile is so worth the trips to the orthodontist, and wearing braces was nowhere near as bad as I thought. Read on to find out more about how you can straighten your smile.

Telltale Signs You Will Qualify For Dental Implant Surgery

by Jacqueline Byrd

Your dental expert may recommend getting implants whenever you lose a tooth or several of them. After all, they understand that implants are a permanent solution that will promote your oral health and enhance the functionality of the dental system. For instance, you will be able to speak normally, and your chewing abilities won't be affected.

Also, your facial structure will not change because the jaw bone will remain strong after the missing root is replaced with an implant. But before you seek dental implant services, verify if you qualify for the procedure. Here are some signs that you can rely on implants to restore your smile.

The Gums Are Healthy

One of the key things the dentist will check before recommending implant surgery is the health condition of your gums. Ideally, the gum tissue should be able to close around the implant after installation to provide a solid root for the new tooth.

If your gum isn't healthy or you have a condition like periodontal disease, the healing process will not happen properly. Either you'll heal slowly or not heal at all. Sometimes the dental expert may need to consider gum grafts to ensure the gum tissue around the implants grows to secure the implant.

You Aren't Suffering From Chronic Illnesses

Your overall health is of utmost importance and will determine the success of the implant treatment. But, the implant recovery processes can be affected by chronic illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and other autoimmune disorders.

So, before surgery, you may need to disclose your health condition or get some tests done before the big day. If the body cannot handle the surgery, you'll have to wait until you get well.

You Prioritize Oral Hygiene

Do you always feel like something is wrong when you forget to clean your teeth or floss? And do you adhere to the professional teeth cleaning schedule? If you prioritize oral hygiene practices and take good care of your teeth, you'll be a suitable candidate for an implant procedure.

While implants are made of synthetic materials, your oral health must be maintained to promote the healing process and ensure the implants last longer. For instance, you may get gum disease if you don't maintain the recommended oral practices. This will affect the issue that holds the implant in place, meaning the new tooth will be at risk.

You Don't Smoke

Lifestyle habits like smoking aren't recommended before dental implant surgery. This is why dentists ask their clients to stop smoking for several weeks or months before the procedure. Smoking makes your mouth prone to infections due to elevated temperatures. It also causes blood thinning making it difficult for the implant to heal. So, smoking should be avoided at all costs.
